INTRODUCTION
Introducing Microsoft Query
Welcome to Microsoft® Query for Microsoft Windows™ and Microsoft Query for the Apple® Macintosh®! This section introduces you to Microsoft Query, shows you how to start it, and gives you an action plan for learning how to use it.
Generally, the features in Microsoft Query for the two operating environments are identical. However, when instructions differ, you'll see a qualification such as "In Microsoft Query for Windows" or "In Microsoft Query for the Macintosh." Follow the instructions that apply to your version.
Similarly, most of the illustrations in this book apply to both environments; however, for dialog boxes that list file names, only the Microsoft Windows version of the illustration appears. If you're working with Microsoft Query for the Macintosh, you would see a comparable dialog box that doesn't use MS®-DOS-type file names.
What Is Microsoft Query?
Microsoft Query is a simple but powerful graphical tool that you can use to retrieve and organize data from a variety of sources. For Microsoft Query for Windows, you can use data in the following formats: Microsoft Excel, Microsoft FoxPro®, Microsoft Access®, Paradox®, dBASE®, Microsoft SQL Server, ORACLE® Server, text, and Btrieve®. (Drivers for some of these sources come with Microsoft Query. If you need additional drivers, contact Microsoft or Apple for information about available drivers. For Microsoft Query for the Macintosh, see the Readme for information on file formats and drivers.) You tell Microsoft Query what data you want and how you want it ordered and displayed.
