AUTHOR'S PREFACEThe four books in this series "Modern English" are intended for the average pupil of the less academie type in secondary schools.The exercises are ail based upon selected extracts from books by modern writers, and each extract has been appro-priately illustrated. These extracts have been selected solely with a view to their direct interest and instant appeal to the average boy or girl.Each section may be used for both class and individual work, exercises being both oral and written. The exercises are grouped, for convenience, into practice in Compréhension, Vocabulary and the simplest Grammar and Composition, concluding with a novel feature, "Something to Discover," which requires the use of suitable reference books such as the School Library usually contains. Throughout the books a minimum knowledge of grammatical termin-ology is assumed, and no tedious or formai grammatical exercises are included. Suitable Revision Exercises are included at regular intervais.The général plan of the books follows closely Suggestions for Teachers. Every effort has been made to avoid pedantry and pretentiousness, and to help the pupils to read, think, speak, and write about topics that interest them in the world of to-day.Most of the extracts are from modem and copyright sources, and the author is grateful to the numerous pub-lishers and writers who have so readily granted permission for their inclusion.F.
