Happy New Year to all MET readers,
and welcome to the fourth volume of
the 'new' MET.
So, what's new for 1995? MET has a new
section: For & Against. Simon Haines, in
the first contribution to this section, looks
at the pros and cons of pairwork. This may
strike you as a surprising topic. Surely
everyone does pairwork? There are no
disadvantages, are there? Well, see what
Simon Haines has to say on the topic on
page 55. I hope that For & Against will not
only give you something to think about, but
that it will also prove to be a good format for
use on teacher-training courses. And I look
forward to receiving contributions from you
on other topics. Maybe this section is suited
to an article jointly written by two colleagues
who have opposing views on a topic.
As I've said before in an editorial, when I'm
putting together an issue of MET, one or
more themes sometimes emerge. This issue,
however, is rather a celebration of diversity!
And where the same topic, coursebooks,
does come up in two articles, one writer
(Frank Fitzpatrick in Keynote) suggests
ways of teaching without a coursebook,
while the other (Paul Sanderson in Tips
and Hints) suggests focusing on the book in
the first lesson of a course.
A theme which continues to interest and
challenge you is error correction. There are
two more articles on this topic in Current
Issues and there'll be more next time, too.
Last year I wrote a note in an editorial
encouraging you to write and let me know
what you have liked or not liked in MET,
and which ideas you have used successfully
with your learners. Thank you for your
positive letters, including the letter from
Simon Gill, who has used Jill Cadorath's
idea for phrasal verbs and Shaun Gates'
'gambling' idea (both in Classroom Ideas,
Vol 3 No 3) with a group of teachers in
Slovakia, with whom, he says, both ideas
'went down a real storm'. I think that
means they liked them
So, if you haven't yet made a New Year's
resolution, let it be to write to MET.
