PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITIONA new edition being called for, the undersigned has taken the opportunity to revise and bring the book up to date. It was originally prepared in the immediate post-war period when building and furnishing were still in the throes of " Austerity," so, in many cases, examples were taken from work done prior to 1939. The situation now is very different, and the last few years have seen remarkable developments in both furniture and interiors, of which, it is hoped, a representative selection of fine examples is now shown. .Rodney HooperSpring, 1955PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITIONThe chief aim of the authors in preparing this book has been to illustrate and describe the production of Modern Furniture and Fittings, apd to show characteristic examples and technique by the use of Photographs and Measured and Working Drawings representative of a wide and varied field of work rather than of exceptional examples. The authors have not concentrated on a particular school of design. The book is intended to be of practical value to all those engaged in design and production, and to assist designers, draughtsmen and craftsmen. The authors have aimed at securing a close relationship between the examples illustrated in Photographs, and the Working Drawings and Diagrams, and have taken special pains to illustrate technique by means of drawings and diagrams. In four specialised chapters, the authors have had the invaluable assistance of Messrs. Geo. H. Chantrell and W. O. Cheeseman. Mr. Chantrell prepared all the measured drawings in Chapters VI and VII, " Church Furniture and Fittings," and also notes from which the explanatory diagrams and text were prepared. Mr. Cheeseman made full-size working drawings of the examples illustrated in Chapters XVIII and XIX, " Showcases and Shop Fitting Practice," and also provided notes from which the final drawings and descriptive text were prepared, and the authors desire to express their appreciation, and sincere thanks, for their enthusiastic co-operation. Current design and technique in Furniture and Fittings cannot be illustrated and described comprehensively in one volume, and this book is designed to be supplementary to " Modern Cabinet Work," by Percy A. Wells and John Hooper. The latter book, in its 6th Edition, has been entirely remodelled, revised and enlarged by the undersigned to bring it into line with current practice.During the war, the training of designers and craftsmen almost ceased, and intensive technical training will be an important feature of the reconstruction period in order to cope with vast building and reconstruction programmes in European countries and in America. These programmes will call for the production of Furniture and Fittings needed in Houses, Flats, Shops and Stores, Hotels, Ships, Libraries and Public and Ecclesiastical Buildings, and the authors hope that the present book will prove helpful in enabling Craftsmen, Designers, Architects, Draughtsmen, Teachers and Students to meet the requirements of this important reconstruction period.John HooperOctober, 1948Rodney Hooperv
