STURCZ ZOLTÁN Modern Nyelvoktatás: indulás és első korszak 1963-1989 Szépe György emlékének ajánlva Modern Language Teaching: The early stages of the periodical from 1963 to 1989. In memóriám György Szépe 50 years ago, in 1963, under the auspices of the Literature and Language Board of the Society for Dissemination of Knowledge in Hungary, the periodical Modern Language Teaching was launched. Though the periodical had the subtitle News for higher education and adult training, in reality its goal was to show the relationship between contemporary language training and applied linguistics. Today these early stages of the periodical until 1989 are regarded as phases of historical importance for the development of language pedagogy and applied linguistics in Hungary. In the different volumes of the periodical, pedagogic research, new trends in linguistics from Hungary as well as from Eastern and Western countries were equally presented. Besides its informative function, the journal offered an opportunity for publications and established a forum for professionals. The wide range of content, the high quality of the articles, overviews of the state of the art in the field, volumes devoted to specific themes and the bibliographical references all enhanced the professional activity of language training departments and departments of applied linguistics in tertiary education. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the contents proves that, thanks to the devoted contribution of the editorial board, the periodical - which started as a professional „samizdat" distributed in mimeographed copies - reached the level of a high-quality professional journal. As a result, it inspired professionals for launching similar publications and series in the field. Indulás, háttér, alapok Jelen folyóirat - a Modern Nyelvoktatás - jubileumi évfordulóhoz érkezett. 2013-ban ünnepelheti ötvenedik születésnapját. Fél évszázada, 1963-ban a Tudományos Ismeretterjesztő Társulat keretében, azon belül a TIT Irodalmi és Nyelvi Választmánya gondozásában elindult a Modern Nyelvoktatás című periodika. A kiadvány A felső- és a felnőttoktatás tájékoztatója alcímet viselte, de igazából kezdetektől a nyelvoktatás modern eszköztárát, új útjait és az alkalmazott nyelvészettel való összefüggéseit kívánta bemutatni. A periodika 1989-ig tartó szakaszát ma már a magyar nyelvpedagógia és az alkalmazott nyelvészet tudománytörténeti eseményeként tarthatjuk számon. Tegyük hozzá, hogy ez a korszak, az 1963-1989 közötti időszak a folyóirat életének első szakasza, amelyet szervezési, kiadási, anyagi okok miatt, néhány éves kényszerű szünet után, 1995-től követett a második szakasz. Joggal merül fel a kérdés, hogy miért a TIT, a Tudományos Ismeretterjesztő Társulat keretében született meg a gondolat, és valósult meg a periodika.
