4 PREFACE The development of molecular cell biology science has dramatically increased in the last few decades. Attention has focused on new techniques that are indispensable for everyday medical practice and research. The present edition of the laboratory manual is based on previous handouts edited by József Szeberényi and László Komáromy, but it is modernized and some of the practicals are rewritten. In the Molecular cell biology Laboratory manual there are practices, performed in the first and second semesters of the Molecular cell biology compulsory course. In the beginning of each chapter the theoretical background is summarized, necessary to understand the practical part, followed by the experiments. The aim of molecular cell biology practices is to allow the completion of the simplest methods for the students. More complex experiments and the ones that would exceed the length of the lab time, in the form of demonstration are presented for the students. The experiments can only be performed and understood in the short period of lab time, if the students come prepared to practice. It is therefore very important that prior to the practice to be carried out students read the theoretical and practical part of the appropriate chapter. The laboratory manual also serves as a workbook, students need to draw or write the results of the experiments in the place provided after completing the experiment. I thank Prof. József Szeberényi, from whom I received a lot of useful advice and professional help during the planning of the experiments and preparation of the text. Prof. László Komáromy's experience and his practical approach has greatly contributed to the preparation of the laboratory manual.
