Foreword
MOS integrated circuits (the term MOS has been derived from the sequence of layers: Metal-Oxide-Silicon) are capable of a substantial increase in the density of integration, i.e. in the number of devices contained in an integrated circuit.
One of the reasons is the absence of isolation regions between transistors, necessary in bipolar circuits. In addition, fieldeffect transistors require only a minimum amount of operating power.
The increasing level of integration causes a growing portion of the equipment fabrication to be shifted to the component manufacturer.
This trend is exemplified by the pocket calculators, in which integrated circuits and the display unit constitute about 80% of the total value added.
As a consequence, major shifts in the basic structure of the electronic industry can be expected to occur. They are becoming evident already.
Hence, it is important for everyone working in this section of industry to concern himself with the consequences resulting from Large Scale Integration, made possible by the MOS-tech-nology.
This booklet is intended as an introduction to MOS technology and applications. It explains, what kind of circuits can be realized in MOS advantageously and what their characteristic electrical properties are.
The information offered will help the technical man to understand the various MOS-techno-logies and select one of them for a particular application; the manager is provided with a variety of essential economic considerations.
