Moscow is the capital of the U.S.S.R., the main city of the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic (R.S.F.S.R.), and the centre of Moscow Region. It lies in the heart of the Russian Plain, between the rivers Oka and Volga, and is cut by the Moskva River and its major tributary, the Yauza. Several minor tributaries have been enclosed in underground canals and pipes. The Moskva has its source in Moscow Region. It is 502 kilometres (312 miles) long and drains into the Oka near the town of Kolomna. Within city limits the river describes a number of curves over a stretch of more than 45 kilometres (28 miles), dividing the city into two unequal parts. The larger part, and the Kremlin, are on its high leit bank, and the smaller, known as Zamoskvorechye, on the low right bank. Its width varies from 100 metres (328 feet) to 500 metres (1,640 feet) in the South Port area. Moscow's relief is hilly, its south-western district on the Lenin Hills being more than 200 metres (656 feet) above sea-level.
