Chapter One
In Louisville, the sun came out at exactly three in the afternoon after a steady drizzle that had begun at dawn. The giant airliner signaled the tower for the landing just as the last cloud left the sky. Outside the airport, a thousand or so umbrellas were closed as the crowd heaved a vast sigh of relief. Suddenly a woman's voice rose, shrill with excitement and loud enough to be heard over the laughter, the shuffle of feet, the squalling babies, the conversations: "That's it! That's her plane coming in right now!"
Every face was raised skyward as the aircraft emerged from the heavenly blue and shone silver and majestic under the hot June sun. A collective cheer rose to ear-splitting crescendo just as the plane set down. It was followed by a rhythmical chant that was audible to the debarking passengers:
WE WANT SHANNON! WE WANT SHANNON! WE WANT SHANNON!
