PREFACE
While working on a prize essay on lubrication in the conjunctival sac for the University of Copenhagen in 1962-1963 my interest in the conjunctival glands arose. This prize essay had been set by Professor Holger Ehlers, M. D., Head of the University Eye Clinic, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen.
The studies sugmitted in this volume were started in the spring of 1964 in the University Eye Clinic, Copenhagen, and were completed while I held a fellowship (kandidatstipendium) in the University of Copenhagen from March 1965. My supervisor during the tenure of this fellowhip was Professor Holger Ehlers who displayed vivid interest in my study and gave me great support in numerous respects.
Professor Harald Moe, M. D., Institute of Medical Anatomy, Copenhagen, has also followed the studies with interest and afforded valuable help.
The ordinary sections were prepared in the Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory of the University Hospital, Copenhagen, whose head, S. Ry Andersen, M. D., with unfailing helpfulness, also gave me practical aid in other ways. With great skill, Mrs. Tove Jacobsen, Mrs. Annette Michelsen, and Mrs. Anne-lise Poulsen, histotechnicians, cut and stained the preparations.
The whole mounts were efficiently stained by Mrs. Minni Christensen, laboratory technician.
The whole mounts were collected in the University Institute of Forensic Medicine, Copenhagen, with the kind permission of Professor H. Gormsen, M. D In this task I received great practical aid from Mrs. Karen Skarup and the laboratory officials.
Mrs. Bodil Topp, Medical Secretary in the University Eye Clinic, has in her usual helpful way given me advice and guidance in many practical problems.
To all those mentioned above, as well as to my family, I extend my sincere thanks.
The study was aided by a grant from the Danish Science Foundation.
Virum, December 1967.
