MULLION IN LIVERPOOL " A RE you going away in the hoUdays?" asked Beryl iX Canning. "We're going to Rhyl for a fortnight." Mullion shook her hair from her hot face and leaned back in her desk with a sigh. Going away! How lovely it sounded in the stuffy classroom, with the unceasing rattle and roar of the tramcars outside. "No," she said slowly, "I don't think so. Daddy isn't having his holidays until September." It was July and the hot summer sunshine was pouring into the classrooms of Barton Street School. Tomorrow afternoon the Liverpool schools would break up for six weeks' holiday. "And then no more Barton Street!" thought Mullion, bending again over her sewing. For she had passed for the High School! She had raced home at dinner-time to tell her mother the good news, and ever since then she had felt limp and tired, as though the relief had been almost too great. It seemed queer that she would never again come to Barton Street, but would have a new school uniform and go to the High School instead. But it was all a long way off—weeks and weeks away! Goodness! It was hot! Mullion fell into a dream and was startled to hear Miss Gray's voice saying: "Mullion Kennedy, don't you want to finish that overall by tomorrow? It's ten minutes to four, you know." She tosssd back her hair again and set to work diligently, but the needle slipped out of her hot fingers. 7
