PREFACE
Many of the events recounted in this book reflect a horror difficult to comprehend in terms of the personal experiences most of us have had, and because the horror is so alien, it tends to be incredible. Therefore, we have felt obligated to identify in Chapter Notes the sources of data on which each chapter is based. And to enable readers further to assess the accuracy and validity of our reporting, we also consider ourselves obligated to explain in some detail how the book was conceived, researched and written.
The decision to publish a book about Cambodia resulted from two separate proposals that by coincidence reached the editors of the Reader's Digest on the same day, September 8, 1975.
The preceding July managing editor Kenneth Gil-more sent me a routine handwritten note: "I keep seeing fragmentary reports that suggest something terrible may be taking place in Cambodia. Please find
