Colin Mason's Music in Britain 1951-62 carries forward Rollo Myers's Music since 1939, a survey ofthe war years, which was continued in Frank Howes's Music 1945-50. It appraises the work of some composers and performers who have recently come to the fore, examines the functions of the chief orchestras and opera companies, and describes the part played by radio, television and the principal festivals in fostering new works. Music in Britain also describes the administration and economics of music hfe in Britain during the last dozen years.
Colin Mason was born in 1924, and studied music at Trinity College of Music in London and at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest. He has made a special study of the music of Bartók on which he wrote the article in the 5th edition of Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians. A member of the music staff of the Guardian since 1950, he became chairman of the executive committee of the Macnaghten Concerts in 1962, and Editor of Tempo (a quarterly journal on contemporary music) in the same year. He also edited the supplementary volume to Cohhett's Cyclopedic Survey of Chamber Music (1963).
