Foreword
This book was commissioned by the Sibelius Centenary Committee appointed by the Finnish Government. In the following pages we have tried to give a résumé of Finnish music. Following the main lines of development, it covers Finnish music from the earliest appearance of the Gregorian influence right up to the present day. The central figure in Finnish music is commemorated in Chapter 2 Sibelius Today. Relatively few pages have been devoted specifically to him because the existing number of reference books on him and his works in various languages is fairly extensive and becoming more so.
Our thanks are due to Professor Joonas Kokkonen, member of the Finnish Academy, for his valuable help. We should also like to thank the Otava Publishing Company, and all those who have kindly assisted with pictorial material.
Helsinki, May 15th, 1965 Timo Mäkinen Seppo Nummi
This new edition of Música Fennica resembles the first edition in structure and partly in content. The chapters written by Seppo Nummi have been left almost untouched because their original form is, in itself, of historical significance. The chapter Today & Tomorrow, ' II (1985), IS completely new. It deals partly with the same composers treated by Seppo Nummi. However, I do not regard this slight repetitiveness as necessarily negative
