Foreword This book was commissioned by the Sibelius Centenary Committee appointed by the Finnish Government. In the following pages we have tried to give a résumé of Finnish music. Following the main lines of development, it covers Finnish music from the earliest appearance of the Gregorian influence right up to the present day. The central figure in Finnish music is commemorated in Chapter 2 Sibelius 7oday. Relatively few pages have been devoted specifically to him because the existing number of reference books on him and his works in various languages is fairly extensive and becoming more so. Our thanks are due to Professor Joonas Kokkonen, member of the Finnish Academy, for his valuable help.
