Th e present volume is evidence that musical education in Hungary is on the right path: it is designed not only to train musicians, but audiences as well.Continuing on the same line it will have achieved its purpose when matters are managed by those who have experienced the advantages of this education themselves, namelythose who are now about ten years old.If one were to attempt to express the essence of this education in one word, it could only besinging. The most frequent word to be heard on ToscaninVs lips during his orchestral rehearsals was ^'Cantarer expressed in a thousand and one shades of meaning.Such encouragement is wasted on those who have never sung. Are there any such people? I refused to believe it, but I have been convinced by innumerable proofs that they exist. Indeed, why should anyone sing who has not been hushed to sleep in his cradle by his mother's lullabies, who has grown up in the presence of the radio and the gramophone and can hear much better singing by turning a knob than he can ever hope to produce himself? Our age of mechanization leads along a road at ending with man himself as a machine; only the spirit of singing can save us from this fate.
