Prologue
Cleveland, Ohio Fall 2004, Summer 2005
September slipped by quickly like a child who, praised by his parents and delighted to be recognized for his good behavior, disappears into his room to finish tomorrow's homework. It was a month of golden splendor; the leaves, unusually bright in their orange and yellow hues, competed with the brilliant red and. copper foliage all around. In September the Keller family was filled with hope, hope that Kathleens bout with cancer would soon be over. She was in remission, Dr. Peterson told them, and everyone rejoiced.
But October was different: gloomy, rainy and sunless. It showed on the faces of those who dreaded the coming winter months. As the days went by Kathleen's condition worsened. By the end of the month she lay lifeless on the hospital bed in a private room at the Cleveland Clinic. Her beautifiil face looked peacefid now, her light brown hair carefully combed, and her gown carefully arranged on her chest. Long sleeves covered, her emaciated arms.
Dr. Peterson had called the family. His voice was solemn, but kind.
