Hungary's future will depend on its citizens, but who will those citizens be? What will be their mindset, who will teach them, how will they remember our past? Outside Hungary's borders, about five million people live throughout the world, who are Hungarians or have a Hungarian ancestry. Hungarians, due to their history, have settled across our globe and will likely continue to do so in today's mobile world. Therefore, it may be called a "world-wide" nation. I am certain that today's youth and future generations, sooner or later, will be interested in their roots, the history of their family and Hungary. Even for those who are not Hungarian, but who appreciate our culture, or are just friends of Hungary, this oral history book will be valuable and interesting.
We Hungarians should be proud of our past, not every single event in it, of course, but certainly of such as the Hungarian contributions to the scientific, cultural, global heritage and sports life of the entire world. As to our national history, one of the unquestionable pinnacles was the 1956 Revolution and freedom fight, an example for the whole world. During the Hungarian Revolution of October 23, the impossible happened: a small nation shook the foundation of the Communist world.
How can one explain this Revolution in which most participants were aware that they were potentially putting their lives at risk? In retrospect, one may reasonably question, whether the revolutionaries acted rationally, when
