I. An Unwelcome Caller
N"ina Martin ran a finger along the strings of a dusty old guitar that hung on the wall. In the front of the antique shop, her father was busy with a customer. Nina watched them for a moment. The woman was hovering over a large shiny black urn — the Ali Baba urn — trying to make up her mind about it. First she examined it up close, and then she stepped back to view it from a distance.
Nina's father made no attempt to push the sale. As usual, he stood by patiently, an imlit cigarette dangling from his mouth. He waited silently for the woman to decide about the um.
