IIIGIUSEPPE VERDI, OVERTURESIt is not accidental, that Verdi is represented in this collection only by few works, the number of which is not in relation to the extraordinary fertility of his entire production. The reason, however, is evident. This collection after its whole construction, is gravitating in instrumental chamber-and orchestra music, while Verdi's aim was to be exclusively a stage composer, proceeding in this regard much farther than most of his special colleagues, chiefly than his great contemporanian and artistic counterpart Richard Wagner. Verdi not only declined any activity in instrumental music as it seems, he even considered his string quartet, his only instrumental work, as a sort of deviation later on but he deemed it positively unitalian, origined from German influence. Only vocal, chiefly stage music, is rooting in the Italian popular soul after his opinion; therein his country was to remain leading, all other kinds of music leaving to Germans and other nations. We may consider this as onesided, but it is historically founded, and we are to realize, that Verdi in no way was adherent of sta-tionariness, but on the contrary of reasonable progress, confined however to that species, which seemed to him, the fullblooded Italian, as a sort of mission for his nation.It is known, that Verdi, just like Wagner both were born in the same year, followed the aim, to replace the so-called Grand Opera, the style which had been created by Spontini, Meyerbeer and others, and which then since about two decades ruled the stage world, by an actual new creation. But just what is said above, teaches, that he was to proceed on quite different, downright opposite ways as Wagner. Even though also for the latter, except some works of his youth, the drama formed the almost exclusive contents of his life production, this however would not be imaginableEs ist kein Zufall, daß Verdi in dieser Sammlung nur durch einige Werke vertreten ist, deren Zahl in keinem Verhältnis steht zu der außerordentlichen Fruchtbarkeit seines Gesamtschaffens. Die Ursache liegt vielmehr klar zutage. Diese Sammlung hat ihrer ganzen Anlage nach ihren Schwerpunkt in der instrumentalen Kammer- und Orchestermusik, während Verdi ausschließlich Bühnenkomponist sein wollte und darin vielleicht weiter ging als die meisten seiner engeren Kollegen, vor allem auch als sein großer Zeitgenosse und künstlerischer Gegenpart Richard Wagner. Verdi lehnte nicht nur selbst jede Betätigung auf dem Gebiete der Instrumentalmusik ab es scheint, als ob er sein Streichquartett, das einzige Instrumentalwerk, später für eine Art Entgleisung hielt , sondern er hielt diese Gattung für geradezu unitalienisch, nur dem deutschen Einfluß entstammend. Nur die Vokal-, vor allem die Bühnenmusik, wurzelt nach seiner Ansicht im italienischen Volkstum; darin sollte es führend bleiben, die übrigen Arten der Musik sollte man den Deutschen und andern Völkern überlassen. Man mag dies als einseitig ansehen, aber es ist historisch begründet, und man muß auch bedenken, daß Verdi damit keinesfalls für den Stillstand, sondern im Gegenteil durchaus für einen organischen Fortschritt eintrat, aber eben nur auf dem Gebiet, auf dem er, der Vollblutitaliener, gewissermaßen eine Mission seines Volkes erblickte.Es ist bekannt, daß Verdi genau wie Wagner beide waren im gleichen Jahr geboren davon ausging, die große Oper, deren Stil von Spontini und Meyerbeer u. a. geschaffen worden war, und die damals seit etwa zwei Jahrzehnten die Bühnenwelt beherrschte, durch eine zeitgemäße Neuschöpfung zu ersetzen.
