INTRODUCTION
This book is an exposition of Theravada Buddhism,
and an application of its teachings to the problems
of modern times. It is written, as far as may be,
in plain language ; but where technical terms are
unavoidable for lack of corresponding English
wrords, they are fully explained.
Buddhism is both a religion and a philosophy.
Its doctrines are found to have anticipated in
remarkable ways many of the conclusions of
modern science, and the method of that rationalist
school of thought which is gaining ground in the
Western world to-day. For these reasons, and
because of its essential naturalism, as opposed
to supernaturalism, and its humanism, Buddhism,
although one of the oldest religions in the world,
has a real and vital message for our times.
There are some who may consider Buddhism
to be merely a curiosity of antiquity, or that it is
a cult suited only for the dreamy Orient; that
