Preface
Medical students, residents, and others in training as health care professionals involved in caring for children may be overwhelmed by the quantity of medical knowledge potentially applicable to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders that may affect children during their development from embryonic to adult life. The editors and contributors summarize this enormous amount of information and the relevant science on which it is based in Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics, which is completely revised and updated every 4 years.
Because of its necessary comprehensiveness, even as a distillate of the broad field of pediatrics, Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics cannot be kept in one's pocket wherever one is caring for children. Therefore, the editor has condensed the clinical portions of Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics into this pocket-sized companion handbook. This Pocket Companion consists of brief summaries of key features of growth and development and of the principal diseases and disorders the student or trainee is likely to encounter in caring for children.
This Pocket Companion should not and cannot be the replacement for a textbook of pediatrics. Each brief chapter is cross-referenced to the appropriate sections in Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics, 16th edition, except when the chapter numbers are the same. The Pocket Companion should be used only as a brief introduction to, or a reminder of, an aspect of clinical pediatrics when there is not immediate access to, or time to consult, the Nelson Textbook. Because the quantity of material presented is too brief to stand on its own, it is strongly recommended that the relevant subjects in the Nelson Textbook be consulted as soon as time permits. Both books should be used as a combined education activity.
