I. INTRODUCTION
The many advantages achieved by the first form of neuroleptanalgesia, such as a low intraocular pressure and a calm, painfree patient postoperatively, described in Part I of this work, were the main reasons for our continuing to use the second form of neuroleptanalgesia in cataract surgery. The drawbacks experienced in the first series were mostly due to difficulties in the anaesthetic technique or to unacquaintance with the method.
The second form of neuroleptanalgesia presented in this paper provides three alternatives for the conduction of anaesthesia: pure neuroleptanalgesia (with nitrous oxide) with spontaneous or controlled respiration, or heavy sedation with local anaesthesia.
Each of these methods will be described and their advantages and disadvantages discussed.
