Jorge Alberto Costa e Silva has been Titular Professor and Chairman of Rio de Janeiro Medical School, International Director of the Mentái lllness Prevention Center in New York, former Professor of Psychiatry at the New York University Medical (NYU) School, former Chairman of the NYU International Center for Mentái Health Policy and Research and former Vice-Chairman for International Affairs of the Miami University. In 2001 he was elected Vice President of the Brazilian Academy of Medicine. Dr Costa e Silva served as the Dean of the Medical School at the University of Rio de Janeiro from 1981-1985. Prior tojoining thefaculty at NYU Medical School, Dr Costa e Silva was Director ofthe Division of Mentái Health and Prevention of Substance Abuse at the WHO Headquarters in Geneva from 1994-1999. Dr Costa e Silva continues to be a visiting professor at many universities all over the world, a member ofthe WHO Panel of Experts since 1980 and Director of the WHO Collaborating Center in Rio de Janeiro since 1982. He has been the Past President of many governmental and non-governmental organizations including the World Psychiatric Association (1990-1994), International Committeeforthe Advancement of Neuroscienceand Psychiatry (1993-1994), and World Association for Social Psychiatry (1993-1994). He is Titular Member ofthe International Academy of Sciences. Dr Costa e Silva is a member of the editorial board of several national and international journals, and has written more than 300 articles and several books. He was awarded the title of "World Leaderof Psychiatry" by the World Psychiatric Association, the first psychiatrist in the world to receive this award. Jean-Paul Macher is a psychiatrist and researcher in Clinical Neurosciences. Dr Macher's main research areas are neuropsychopharmacology and functional brain imaging.
