Lesson 1 1 My world
(i) Read the four descriptions.
(1) Tony Quaife, 34, is a hovercraft captain. He works for a company called Hoverspeed, which links ports on the south coast of England with France.
(2) Andy Kay, 27, is based in Aberdeen, Scotland. He works on an oil production platform in the North Sea.
(3) Jenny Smith, 22, is studying French at Exeter College, Oxford. She is in the third year of a four-year course.
(4) Gufter Hussein, 32, came to Britain from Pakistan with his family in 1965. He now owns a grocer's shop in Slough, Berkshire.
Now read what the four people say about their lives. Then look back at the descriptions and décidé who is speaking. Write your answers in the box.

(a) 'All my children go to normal state schools. They integrate really well with the white children there. After school they always go to the mosque to learn from the Holy Koran - our Bible, if you like. They also learn to speak Urdu. I speak Urdu and Punjabi as well as English.'
(b) 'I have to do a lot of reading for my course -over one hundred books a year. Also I have to write one or two essays every week. In my spare time I'm a member of the Debating Society. We have regular guest speakers and it's a place to meet friends and relax.'
(c) 'We work long hours, twelve a day, fourteen days at a time. I share a room with four other men, but as we usually work different shifts, we don't get in each other's way. At the end of the two-week work period we get two weeks off and are flown back to the mainland by helicopter.'
(d) 'When the sea is calm we can cover the
35 km in twenty-eight minutes, travelling at an average of 100 km.p.h When it's rough we have to reduce our speed and it takes about an hour.'
