Preface
This edition of New Present Day English has been rewritten to take account of recent advances in the theory and practice of teaching English as a foreign language.
The number of lesson units and the number of separate teaching items have both been reduced so that the material of Book One may be covered in the usual academic year of about thirty-six weeks. Narrative and conversation passages have been retained, but they have been made more realistic, with an increased emphasis on the interests of young people. Numerous examples of the new structures to be presented in each unit have been included in the dialogues and reading passages and the exercises have been made more varied, stimulating and contextual. These may be supplemented by the New Present Day English Work Books. Much more use has been made of illustrations, which are designed to stimulate vocabulary-building and oral work in the classroom as well as to enliven the text.
The controlled vocabulary—some 750 words in Book One, only about 50 of which are not in the General Service Word List—is given at the end. There is an easy reference index to the exercises and a list of the sentence patterns giving the teaching point covered and an example of each. Throughout the book nothing is taken for granted except what has been covered in earlier units. Phonetic transcripts are given for all new words as they occur, and again in the general vocabulary. The standard I. P. A. symbols replace the simplified forms used in earlier editions. In the second half of the book a short anecdote in lighter vein has been added at the end of each unit.
Advice on the best method of using New Present Day English together with detailed teaching notes for each unit will be found in Teacher's Book One. Teaching English as a foreign or second language is a highly skilled art, particularly when rapid results are looked for. It is hoped that this course, based on long practical experience, will make the task easier for the teacher and more enjoyable for the student.
