Preface
New Present Day English has been rewritten to take account of advances in the theory and practice of teaching English as a foreign language since the original Present Day English course appeared.
The number of lesson units and the number of teaching items have both been reduced so that the material of each book of the course can be covered in the normal school or college year. The narrative and conversation passages have been made more realistic, with increased emphasis on the interests of young people. Numerous examples of the new structures to be presented in each unit have been worked into the dialogues and reading passages, and the exercises are more varied, stimulating and contextual. These may be supplemented by the New Present Day English Work Books. There are many more illustrations to stimulate vocabulary-building and oral work in the classroom as well as enlivening the text. To extend the 750 word vocabulary of Book One a further 500 words are here introduced, almost all in the General Service List of English Words. In the complete Word List at the end of the book the unit in which each word first occurs is shown. I.P.A. phonetic transcripts are given for all new words, and there is an easy reference index to the exercises and a list of sentence patterns.
Suggestions for the best method of using New Present Day English, together with detailed teaching notes on each unit, will be found in Teacher's Book Two. Teaching English as a foreign or second language is a highly skilled art, particularly when rapid results are looked for. It is hoped that this course, based on long practical experience, will make the task easier for the teacher and more enjoyable for the student.
