ForewordThis book, I believe, might very well be named Inside Black America. For it is an intimately detailed story of Negro life. Harlem, the most complex of Negro communities, is used as a sort of test tube in which the germs of Negro thought and action are isolated, examined, and held up to full glare to reflect Black America.It is a reporter's job, relating the Negro's search for democracy, which after all is the essential drive and ultimate goal. Sometimes, in the journey, we are led into curious, entertaining, and often bizarre corners. In the telling, my approach is one of relating affairs in this segregated corner in terms of their broadest meanings and implications to the white community.By and large, I am concerned with the mass, not individuals. Although the book is built on personalities, they are used only in so far as they reveal the influence of broad social factors.Events abroad have lifted the 'Negro problem' out of its limited orbit of a strictly domestic issue. Today, more and more, race and color questions are being thrown into the public scene. The Negro's future and what he thinks it should be is of greatest consequence. A year ago it seemed that his problem would be lost in the raging global conflict. Now he cannot be neglected or ignored. Black men in this country a group larger than some nations involved in the war are feeling a great resurgence of racial kinship to other colored peoples of the world. And this is acutely the concern of white America.
