The first number of New World Writing appeared
in 1952. Since then it has grown to be the most
widely read and most discussed publication of its
kind in the United States. By introducing new
writers, publishing exciting new work by established
writers, and maintaining a consistently high literary
standard, it has compiled a notable record.
It was, then, with genuine regret that we learned
that New World Writing was suspending publica-
tion in the spring of 1959, after the appearance of
its fifteenth number. We felt very strongly that New
World Writing should continue. We therefore con-
sulted with Victor Weybright, Truman M. Talley
and Arabel J. Porter of The New American Library
of World Literature and, with their active and
enthusiastic cooperation, made arrangements for
the publication of future numbers of New World
Writing under the Lippincott imprint, in our Key-
stone paperback series.
We have made our selections for Number 16 with
the standards of the past very much in mind. Natu-
rally, however, editorial tastes do differ. It will be
noted, for example, that we have laid particular
emphasis on unknown writers and first appearances.
We deplore the fact that many literary magazines
