In the midst of the worst fighting in Korea, I
received a telegram from Emmet Hughes, then text editor of
Life magazine, inquiring, "What does it feel like to be a lone
woman correspondent among all those men?" I thought it best
at the time to leave the evaluation of my performance to some-
one else, in that case Carl Mydans of Life's staff, who, it
seemed to me, answered the question thoroughly.
But it has been my experience that curiosity about a woman
working in a man's world (so called) frequently takes discon-
certing priority over my own greatest interest: the reporting
and interpretation of foreign affairs. It's deflating to work hard
at putting together a lecture on the Communist plan for tak-
ing over the Far East and then have the first question from
the audience be, "How did you get to be a foreign correspond-
ent?" or "Why did you want to do all those things?" All of
this, of course, is an indirect way of inquiring, "What makes
Maggie run?"
