Preface
Habent sua fata libelli. When the Hungarian version of this book was mooted, our original idea was to write a comprehensive handbook on the non-invasive methods used in cardiological examinations. At that time it was not feasible, now, however, the Department of Medical Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and Akadémiai Kiadó have provided us an opportunity to publish a book which may come very close to our original objectives. This volume is intended to be a guide reviewing the non-invasive methods which have become widespread all over the world.
The bloodless methods of examining cardiac patients have recently been gaining ground. This book describes the up-to-date techniques essential for implementing them. We have not aimed at completeness, that is why neither traditional electrocardiography nor detailed information on phonocardiography, are included in this book, there are several excellent monographs on both topics. We will, however, discuss in detail the fields where the greatest advancements have been noted, i.e. echocardiography, mechanocardiography, systolic and diastolic time intervals. The less investigated areas will also be included. Some of our own research, for instance, on right ventricular function, up-to-date pharmacokinetic methods, etc. will be reported. This book covers the most important methods to be applied in the non-invasive examination of cardiac patients, providing a sound basis for their evaluation. The large number of references enables the reader to get further information on any of the special aspects of non-invasive cardiology.
