I.: PREFACE Dean Trench's NOTES ON THE PARABLES retains first place among the works on the subject in the English language. It is unrivaled in its extensive and judicious use of the studies of others, ancient or contemporary. The author seems to have left little unexamined which might shed even a side-light on his theme. Trench's treatment of the parables is unsurpassed in depth of spiritual insight. It abounds in practical applications for lives of Christians and non-Christians, for the church and the world. This Popular Edition has been prepared to remove the features which limited the usefulness of Trench's originál work. Nearly one-third of the NOTES ON THE PARABLES, as it first made its appearance, consisted of notes in Greek, Latin, French, and Germán. These have been carefully translated and evaluated. Those judged valuable have been interwoven with the text or retained as notes in the English language. The detailed accounts of erroneous views and their refutations have been largely omitted. While the body of the work is given in very nearly the author's own words, those responsible for the preparation of this issue have not hesitated to make alterations in the interest of simplicity and lucidity. The result of this extensive study and revision is a volume which is more readily usable than the originál, while it retains all the scholarliness of the larger edition. Students of the Bible will be pleased that this well-known work is again available, this time in a more usable form. This issue, which is a reprint of the 1861 edition in a slightly altered form, likewise makes these studies available for members of Bible Classes and study groups. It is equally suited for the study and devotional reading of the individual Christian. In short, this widely-recognized exposition of the parables has now been made available to the generál Christian public. II.: PREFACE Trench's NOTES ON THE MIRACLES is widely acknow-ledged as being the most comprehensive and penetrating study of the subject in the English language. The author manifests a keen sensitivity to the meaning and interpretation of the Biblical text — insisting that God's Word shall speak for itself. Yet, he marshalls the opinions of a wide array of recognized authorities on the subject — realizing that the full light of revelation is focused on no single mind. Trench succeeds admirably in sug-gesting the practical lessons which are embedded in the miracles of our Lord. This Popular Edition of the NOTES ON THE MIRACLES is a companion volume to a similar edition of Trench's NOTES ON THE PARABLES. In preparing this edition the numerous notes in the foreign language — Greek, Latin, Germán, and French — have been carefully translated and evaluated. Those considered valuable have been retained as footnotes. Lengthy passages of a polemic nature, of particular significance to the time of Trench, have been reduced in length or eliminated entirely. A number of other alterations have been made in the interest of clarity and directness of presentation. Ali those who appreciate the scholarship of Archbishop Trench will be pleased that his practical exposition of the miracles is once more available. The generál Christian public will be grateful that this new edition makes this study available for its ready use.
