PREFACE The aim of these exercises is to provide the teacher with a series of tests of a modern type with which he can regularly practise and accurately assess the attainments of his class in English. The following points about them, it is hoped, are worthy of the teacher's attention: 1. Each test should be done in a fixed time, say 35 minutes. 2. The questions are so framed that the minimum of writing is done by the child. As a rule each answer is but a single word or a single sentence. 3. In this way the teacher saves much time and the marking is simplified. 4. The marking is accurate because it is objective- ix., independent of the judgment of the teacher. 5. The number of answers in each test ensures a satisfactory spread of marks. 6. The results can be statistically treated and be used to measure progress within the class, or to compare the work of a class with that of its predecessor. 7. The exercises provide material which is not only useful and legitimate in class, but which alsó may incidentally-and only incidentally-be useful to those children taking external examinations. 8. Answering the tests is meant not to replace but to supplement those lessons in which the children write continuous prose.
