FOREWORD
DRAMASCRIPTS are intended for use in secondary schools, amateur theatrical groups and youth clubs. The plays range widely from estabUshed classics to new works and adaptations of books and film scripts. There is nothing in any of the plays that is beyond the capabilities of younger actors. They may be used in a variety of ways: read privately for pleasure or aloud in groups, acted in the classroom, church hall or youth club, or in public performances.
With OLIVER TWIST, Charles Dickens captured the imagination of the world - no other story has been more consistently loved than that of the little orphan boy who was kept on starvation rations in a parish workhouse, and who dared to ask for more. This dramatisation contains that famous scene, and many others. In it, we meet Fagin and his irrepressible gang of young thieves; the pompous buUy Mr Bumble and the arch Mrs Comey, by whom the Beadle is effectively buUied; the murderous Bill Sikes and his moll Nancy, whom he does to death; and several other unforgettable characters. The play ends with one of the most gruesome 'execution scenes' that have ever been written. Definitely not for the chicken-hearted, this one - but the very greatest fun for everybody else.
