Smart Weapons
Before the fighting started in the Gulf, Saddam Hussein boasted arrogantly that American soldiers would drown in their own blood if war broke out. Troops engaging his forces would be marching into Hell, he warned. As it turned out. Coalition forces neutralized Hussein's military by launching precision air strikes. "Smart bombs" and cruise missiles destroyed Iraq's military installations with pinpoint accuracy, while Patriot missiles intercepted and blasted Hussein's Scud missiles. When Coalition nations entered a ground war, they found Iraqi soldiers surrendering by the thousands. Even the much publicized Iraqi Republican Guard offered little or no resistance to advancing Coalition forces. Hussein had underestimated the power and capability of the Coalition's weaponry!
As a matter of fact, many Americans were surprised to learn how sophisticated and powerful their country's weaponry was. They were awed by TV footage of bombs finding their way into buildings through doors and ventilation shafts. It seemed to many that tax dollars for military hardware had been well spent.
All the military power exerted in the Gulf War is a drop in the powder keg compared to the power God has made available to us Christians in our battles against the Devil. Paul wrote that "the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds" (2 Cor. 10:4). Satan may snarl, sneer and snap at us as he aims his fiery darts, but he is already a defeated foe. If we rely upon our Commander-in-Chief, use the arsenal He has given us, and follow His battle plan, we shall know experi-entially what we know theologically—"we are more than conquerors through him that loved us" (Rom. 8:37).
The lessons in this study guide are designed to help you put on the whole armor of God, stand in the power of His might, wage a good warfare, and experience victory!
