IntroductionThe number of clinics and laboratories where ophthalmic research work is performed as well as the number of specialists engaged in physiologic and pathologic eye research have increased considerably. On the other hand, the possibilities for publication have in no way kept pace with this development. As a result of this situation, the papers appear not only belated but also scattered in numerous journals of various disciplines all over the world and in any language which renders an interchange of opinions very difficult if not impossible. The intention of the editors, O.Hockwin, Bonn, G.Naumann, Hamburg and D. F. Cole, London, to improve this unsatisfactory situation by publishing a new journal, 'Ophthalmic Research', Journal for Experimental and Clinical Ophthalmology, is therefore greatly welcomed by everybody. They will be assisted in their endeavours by a distinguished Editorial Board and by the Publishers, S.Karger, Basel-Munich-New York, who have always taken a keen interest in the publication of works from the field of ophthalmology. The decision to use English as the only language of publication has been prompted by the desire to facilitate an exchange of views on an international basis. The title and subtitle of the journal suggest that papers which deal with findings obtained by biological research methods on the healthy eye and in pathological conditions shall be given first consideration. Works from this field will thus at last have their own organ of publication in ophthalmic literature. This will help the authors to get to know each other and discussions on the methods and results of research should be greatly furthered thereby.
