Introduction
B.E.C. Nordin
After being a neglected subject for a long time, osteoporosis has swung into prominence in the last few years. There are several reasons for this. The most important is probably the rapid spread of densitometric techniques which have moved diagnosis and management from the realm of guesswork into that of medical science. Other factors are the growing concern with the problems of aging, increasing attention to health economics, and the emergence of the concept of'Quality of Life'.
In this rapidly evolving situation, advances are being reported in the literature more rapidly than any but the most dedicated speciálist can monitor. The result is a continuing need for digestion and reassessment, and it is in response to this need that Sandoz organized yet another symposium on therapeutic advances and sponsored the publication of the Proceedings in this elegant volume.
Clinicians looking for simple answers to the management of individual cases may be disappointed not to find a step-by-step guide in these pages, but those who wish to keep up with scientific progress in the field and acquire the background knowledge on which decision-making is based should find the following contributions immensely valuable. It is out of such work as this that a consensus on the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis will ultimately emerge.
