William Shakespeare - Othello [antikvár]

INTRODUCTION Tragedy, in its starkest form is epitomised by Othello. INTRODUCTION Tragedy, in its starkest form is epitomised by Othello. True greatness, achieved in the face of adversity, is humbled and brought down by the inexorable workings of a malign fate unleashed by humán weakness. The central theme in Othello is the humán weakness caused by jealousy, and jealousy is apparent at several levels. There is the jealousy of the Venetian Senator Brabantio, whose daughter Desdemona has been wooed and won by Othello, the Moorish generál whose military skills are essential to the ruling class of Venice. There is Othello's own jealousy, which is stimulated by his natural uxoriousness compounded by the paranoia of the mercenary, and there is that of Othello's officer Iago who is jealous both of Othello's high rank and his lovely and virtuous wife. Othello is asked by the Venetian Senate to lead their forces against the Turks who are about to attack Cyprus. Othello appoints his friend Cassio as his lieutenant, thereby provoking the resentment of his old companion-in-arms Iago, who feels that he should have received the preferment. Iago therefore plans the ruin of both Othello and Cassio by devising a plot whereby Othello is made to believe that Desdemona has been unfaithful to him with Cassio. His stratagem is largely successful; Cassio is implicated and in anguish, Othello smothers Desdemona. When the truth emerges, Othello understands the deception and kills himself, leaving Cassio as Governor of the conquered Cyprus, and arbiter of Iago's fate. The plot of Othello is drawn, like Measure for Measure from the collection of tales Gli Hecatommithi (1565) by Giambattista Cinthio Giraldi of Ferrara. It follows the central themes of tragedy in Western literature, in which a person of superior intelligence and character, a leader of a community, is overcome by circumstances which he strives to master. Aristotle points to the ritual function of tragedy in which the audience, as much a congregation as a body of spectators, is purged of emotions of pity and fear by vicarious participation in the drama. Othello was written between 1602 and 1604, when it was performed before James 1. It was first issued in printed form in the 1622 quarto, and in a slightly different version in the folioof 1623.
