Bővebb ismertető
Preface Writing American history for high-school students presents somé important challenges to the teacher and scholar. We have tried to meet them squarely and responsibly. We have tried: First, to present the panorama of American development, from colonial days to our own time, not only in its broad sweep but alsó in its marvelous diversity and richness. Hence the reader will find chapters on economic, social, and cultural developments to enrich the political and diplomatic mainstream. Second, to write clearly, vividly, and accurately without "writing down." We take American young people seriously and have tried to accord them the respect that their intelligence and serious purpose deserve. Third, to present in this volume the findings of recent historical research and interpretation. Our knowledge of the American past fortunately grows larger every year, and we think that high-school students ought to be kept abreast. We hope that discovery of new facts and interpretations in this book will prompt them to want to go far beyond its covers to r--»The Authors --- read the new histories and biographies upon which our narrative is in part based. Fourth, to help students to grow in citizenship and genuine love of their country and its traditions and institutions. Real love of country comes from thorough knowledge of its history, not from a manufactured patriotism that fears historical truth. The task has been challenging, but it has alsó had many rewards. The greatest of these has been the joy that has come from knowledge that the job was so worthwhile. The authors take this opportunity to acknowledge the devoted assistance of Dr. Rónáid B. Edgerton and Mr. John Bremer of the Editorial Department of Ginn and Company. They are alsó grateful to Professor John Hope Franklin, chairman of the History Department, Brooklyn College, and Professor Vincent P. De Santis, chairman of the Department of History, University of Notre Dame, for reading the entire text and making valuable criticisms and suggestions. Dávid S. Muzzey Arthur S. Link Dr. Dávid S. Muzzey was graduated from Harvard, studied at the University of Berlin and the Sorbonne, and took his Ph.D. at Columbia University. He was Professor of American History at Barnard College for somé twenty years, Carnegie Lecturer on American History in Paris, Edinburgh, and Prague, and Gouverneur Morris Professor of American History at Columbia University. His superb American history texts for secondary schools have been used by over thirty millión students to date. Dr. Arthur S. Link was born in Virginia and was graduated from the University of North Carolina (Phi Beta Kappa), where he took his Ph.D. in 1945. He was full Professor of American History at Northwestern University, Harmsworth Professor at Oxford, and now serves as Professor of History and Director of the projected forty-volume Woodrow Wilson papers at Princeton University. Dr. Link is author of eight books and twice winner of the coveted Bancroft Prize for the best biography: Wilson: The New Freedom (1956) and Wilson: The Struggle for Neutrality (1960).
