Preface
The first edition of this dictionary was adapted from the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, Third Edition. During the period of its preparation and for some years before that, I had the very good luck to work with A S Hornby. I am deeply grateful for that experience since he gave me my interest and skills as a reference compiler and left me with a firm commitment to prepare material which provides all the necessary information in a form that is easy to find and use.
This new text has been completely rewritten and redesigned and takes into account current awareness of intermediate problems. Many dictionaries prepared for this level are simply shortened versions of more advanced ones. My experience in the classroom and in the field of reference research has shown me that intermediate-level students need more help with their English than advanced-level students, not less. This text has been built up from my own identification of intermediate-level students' special needs, and I would like to thank the many students and teachers in Britain and overseas who have provided information, ideas, criticisms and encouragement.
