THF FIELD OF PEDIATRICS 'Many specialities in the field of medicine deal'primarily With problems in particular organ systems or with particular biologic processes or systems of care. Pediatrics, on the other hand, is concerned with disturbances of any system or function that might have impact upon the health or orderly growth and development of the child. The pediatrician's commitment extending beyond purely physical matters, is to secure for all children the opportunity to achieve their full native potential. In the role of understanding guardians of children's physical mental, and emotional progress from conception to maturity, pediatricians are in the vanguard of social concern for children and their families. The caring qualities of any society may best be measured by the concern it manifests for its aged, its disadvantaged, and its young. The young and the disadvontaged are often the same.' (Victor C.
