PREFACE The Local Organising Committee of the PANCARDI 2001 Conference (Sopron, 19-23 September 2001) organises two field trips for the participants who are interested in the geology, geophysics, volcanology, and petrology of the neighbourhood of the meeting site, ie. in NW Transdanubia. The PRE-PANCARDI field trip takes place on 19 September, while the POST-PANCARDI one on 23 September 2001. In this Field Guide you will find a sketch map, the programmes and the detailed description of the two geological field trips. The PRE-PANCARDI field trip starts from the close neighbourhood of the town Sopron and presents the easternmost part of the (Eastern) Alps. This trip is focused on the petrology of the Sopron- and the Köszeg-Rechnitz Mountains. The features of the hundreds of million years old (poly)metamorphic rocks will be demonstrated in well-selected outcrops. The description of the stops has been written by geologists Dr. Kálmán Török (Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest) and Jenő Ivancsics (Hungarian Geological Survey, Sopron) who have been working in this area acquiring ample field and laboratory experience. The POST-PANCARDI field trip aims at the study of the basaUic volcanism in NW Transdanubia. This part of the Field Guide is written by geochemist Dr. Szabolcs Harangi (Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest), who and his colleagues have published several remarkable papers on many aspects of these phenomena covering the time interval of the last 4-7 My. Both trips have important geophysical aspects, too. Therefore the APPENDIX starts with a short geophysical description by Antal Adám (o.m.) leading the participant from the hilly region to the Little Hungarian Plain covered by a several thousand meter thick Neogene sedimentary sequence. This brief summary contains also some information (from both the geophysical and the historical points of view) about the organising institute and its two geophysical observatories in the region. (Their visit is not included in the programme of the PRE-PANCARDI field trip.) About the geophysical aspects of the POST-PANCARDI field trip we just mention that its first stop (Sághegy) served as a gravimetric test area in 1891 for the famous torsion balance invented by Professor Baron Loránd Eötvös. In the region of the second field trip especially intensive magnetotelluric investigation has been carried out. (For more details see the special issue of Acta Geologica Hungarica devoted to the PANCARDI 2001 meeting.) In the Appendix you also find a cultural guide (compiled by Assoc. Prof. Endre Dudich, University of Western Hungary, Sopron) to the touristic highlights of PRE- and POST-PANCARDI field trips: Sopron, Kőszeg, Celldömölk, Sághegy, Lake Balaton, and Badacsony. Both field trips end with wine tasting. Therefore, in order to animate the evening conversations, at the end of this Field Guide, there are some fragments from the excellent booklet Geological Guidebook to Hungarian Wines. As you see, the Local Organising Committee is trying to do its best to make these field trips unforgettable. We hope that you will find this Field Guide not only at the PANCARDI 2001 Meeting, but also at your future stays in NW Transdanubia, Hungary, where you are always heartily welcome. Antal Adám and László Szarka
