Bővebb ismertető
The conferences and subsequent publications of the Center for European Studies have, after three years, become a tradition. This new tradition helps to encourage contact and dialogue between social scientists, activists and politicians in the region. This exchange is more important today than ever before as events in the region testify to the possibilities and tragedies of European transition. We hope that through discussions, understanding and education we can contribute in a non-violent way to an increase in successes and possibilities and will see a decrease in the failures and tragedies in our region. The volume focuses on two, mutually inclusive themes of the transition period in East Central Europe: the rise of nationalism and ethnic conflicts, and the socio-economic and socio-psychological consequences of the move towards a market economy. The countries viewed in these studies include Yugoslavia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, the Czech lands and Slovakia. The roots of nationalism are found both in the unresolved history of the region and in the exacerbation of socio-economic tension brought on by the dramatic and sudden changes. This third volume is the result of the September 1992 annual conference of the CES entitled, "The Paradoxes of Transition: Jf^t has been Accomplished and Where are We Going?" The CES would like to thank the Friedrich Naumann Stiftung, and particu-lary Stefan Musto and Éva Rázsó, for their support and help, both with the conference and the publication of the conference material. The editors would also like to thank András Tapolcai and Tímea Varga for their invaluable help in the completion of this volume.Jo^ Jensen Budapest, November 1993VII
