Parenting for the '90s is the result of my teaching an undergraduate college level parent education course for many years, and during that time, never finding a book which seemed to me to adequately cover the subject. Many books on parenting are available, of course, but few offer the theoretical scope which yields perspective on the field of parent education and also systematic training in parenting skills. My hope is that those who counsel parents, offer programs in family life education, or who are parents themselves will find this book useful.
I am grateful to Jim Mininger, long-term friend and Academic Dean at Hesston College, and to the rest of the Administrative Cabinet for supporting my efforts in so many ways, including a leave-of-absence. I am appreciative also of the Nursing Department faculty who provided daily encouragement as well as a second office on campus so that I could get away from my regular office and the usual routine during the leave. And a big thank you to Kathy Goering, administrative assistant, who does so many things, all of them well.
I am indebted to many others on the faculty here at Hesston College or on the staff at Prairie View Community Mental Health Center: Jim Mininger and Marion Bontrager, for their reviews of chapter 4; Karen Weaver Koppenhaver, chapter 11; Marion Bontrager and Ron Guengerich, chapter 12; Dave Osborne and Doug
