THE HEAVY BURDEN IMPOSED BY DESTINY
A,
l11 evidence points to the fact that Pascin was a man singled out by fate as well as by genius. Pascin always stressed the darker side of existence and has long borne the consequences of the doubtful company he kept during his lifetime. His reputation still suffers from it today. Unlike so many others, he did not even gain greater attention by dying so tragically. He was classed a priori among the damned by all those who judged only by appearance — and the appearances were so often deceiving, viz., an overly agitated life and a work open to licentious interpretation.
