PREFACE
In the past, the role of bronchology in children's hospitals was relatively limited in scope. In recent years, however, besides being an indisj)ensable aid in the clinical work of the jjedi-atrician, bronchology has become an independent clinical discipline. The bronchologist provides basic information in diagnostic problems as well as invaluable help in the solution of emergency cases and in the continuous treatment of chronic obstructive processes of the airways. This ever increasing role of bronchologists in pediatric work can to a great extent be attributed to the rapid improvement of bronchological techniques.
The authors are highly qualified to summarize the knowledge they have accumulated in over twenty years of experience and 30,000 bronchological interventions.
The work is intended primarily for experts engaged in j)e-diatric bronchology and pulmonology. The authors deal in great detail with technical aspects, describing the ideal operating theater, necessary instrumentation, technique of interventions, anesthesiological procedures and possible comj^lications. The prospective trend of further development is also discussed. Dr. Székely and Dr. Farkas have done pioneer work in bronchial catheterization, and the method of bronchography developed by them is fully authoritative.
The clinical part, comprising an impressive number of case histories, figures, and bronchograms, is designed for a much wider public than bronchologists. These chapters offer stimulating and didactic reading and useful information to every practicing pediatrician. Developmental anomalies, chronic diseases of the respiratory tract, the problem of foreign bodies, mucoviscidosis, mycoses, rare syndromes, and a number of clinical pictures — such as allergic diseases — that represent everyday problems to clinicians, are covered in these pages. The authors discuss a jiumber of the problems
