FOREWORD
At People magazine, we write about what's happening in American culture today. We cover people who make news in film, music, fashion, the media, the theater, art, literature, and science. Like the rest of us, these individuals spend a lot of time thinking about tomorrow. What does the future hold in store for them and for the fields they work in? For example, how will upcoming technological advances affect their activities? What new problems will they give rise to? What unforeseen opportunities will they present?
With such questions in mind, we interviewed a number of prominent men and women, all of whom have appeared in the pages of People, about their areas of concern and about the developments they foresee. Where does Surgeon General Koop think the AIDS crisis is headed? Which books does Jay Mclnerney expect we'll be reading in the year 2000? What fashion designs does Betsey Johnson plan on unveihng in outer space? And on a more personal level, we asked about their hopes and fears for the years ahead.
These interviews were originally conducted for a short educational film produced by People. We have published them as a book because the answers to our questions—always interesting and sometimes surprising—seem to us to be both entertaining and thought-provoking, in the best People tradition.
