Introducing the Peoples of the South In a nation sucii as South Africa, where the population stands at about 44.6 million spread across nine provinces and speaking 11 different official languages - and an even greater number of localised dialects - it is little wonder that its peoples, with their various ethnic and cultural heritage, contribute enormously to the exciting diversity of this multicultural land. By the time the first Europeans arrived on the southern tip of Africa, the area was already inhabited by an ancient culture, who today are considered the earliest indigenous people of South Africa. These were the KhoiSan, made up of the Klioi-Khoi and the San (or Bushmen). Although the beliefs and customs of these two groups were similar, there were differences that distinguished one group from the other: whereas the Khoi-Khoi were pastoralists who kepi livestock, the San were purely hunter-gatherers. The KhoiSan were already well established at the Cape when Dulch sailors first landed on its shores and had had a marked impact on the black peoples with whom they had come into contact. The languages spoken by the black peoples of southern Africa have, for example, been influenced by the KhoiSan.
