AcknowledgementsThere are some people who have been particularly influential to us in our own development in relation to the person-centred approach, and we would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge their importance. An early influence for Dave Mearns was Ruth Pickford, who dared to intro-duce him to the unconventional psychologist Dr Cari Rogers, and a later and enduring Californian influence is Doug Land, who never 'teaches' but somehow helps people to learn what it means to be genuinely person-centred.For Brian Thorne much is owed to Professor Bruce Shertzer, whose lec-turing and supervision were a profound inspiration during basic training, and to Dr Chuck Devonshire, Founder of the Center for Cross-Cultural Communication and Co-founder of FDI (Britain), who has created many opportunities over the years for working with person-centred practition-ers from many parts of the world. While the fîrst édition of this book was being written Cari Rogers, the originator of person-centred counselling, died shortly after his 85th birth-day. The authors celebrate his life and work and this revised édition is an expression of their continuing desire to honour his memory and achieve-ment.
