The Devonshire Collection of Italian Drawings A complete catalogue Michael Jaffe Four volumes, boxed set L199.95 Hb 0 7148 2937 4 The Collection of Old Master drawings at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, home of the Dukes of Devonshire, ranks with the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle as the finest privately-owned group of such drawings in Britain, and as one of the great princely collections of Europe. It was formed in the eighteenth century by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Dukes and contains outstanding sheets by the great masters from every artistic school. The four volumes devoted to the Italian drawings have detailed entries for nearly one thousand works from the fifteenth century to the eighteenth, among them numerous reattributions and discoveries. Superbly produced and illustrated, largely in colour, they are the first part of a projected series that will cover all the drawings that have formed part of the historic Devonshire Collection, never previously catalogued in full. In addition to entries on each drawing, each individual volume contains an account of the formation of the Collection, an introduction to the schools and artists represented, and full a scholarly apparatus that enables each to be used independently. The volumes are available as a boxed set or separately. Publication follows a major exhibition of drawings from the Devonshire Collection at the British Museum, London, a version of which will travel to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York. Professor Michael Jaffe is an internationally renowned authority on Old Master Drawings. Until 1990 he was Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, and is currently Emeritus Professor of the History of Western Art at the University of Cambridge.
